Slate and Tile Roofs
TILED ROOFS
As tiling specialist we use many different types of tiles, made of either concrete or clay. We find that Natural Clay tiles have a greater longevity than concrete tiles although are not as cost effective. A great deal of our work with clay tiles involves the use of reclaimed tiles. These have been removed from an existing roof and are suitable to be re-installed onto a new roof. This is a preferred technique when trying to match a new roof with an existing one on an extension for example. Concrete tiles are available in many different sizes, profiles and colours. Due to their low cost they are now becoming more popular with developers. They are particularly useful on large residential or office developments because of their size, relative ease of use and low cost compared with natural materials.
TILED ROOF REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE
Generally most tiled roofs, laid to manufacturers’ instructions, will have a long life span, which should only need occasional general maintenance. In fact studies have proved that regular maintenance will extend the life of a roof considerably. Our roof maintenance plan includes replacement of damaged and missing tiles, re-bedding and re-pointing of ridge and hip tiles, re-pointing and replacing damaged pots to chimneys, moss clearance and repairs to lead flashings and valleys.

SLATE ROOFS
Slates vary from region to region. They are usually laid treble lapped with each slate nailed to the batten. These days, slates are imported from places as far away as China, Spain and Canada. Additionally there are many man made slates on the market made from either fibre and cement or moulded with a mixture of slate dust and glass fibre resin. Some of these combine with the technology of the interlocking tile in order to create a slate effect single lapped roof.
SLATE ROOF REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE
Older slate roofs have in most cases no felt membrane, which can be a cause of heat loss. Also nail rot is most common due to the nails being made from steel rather than modern nails, which are made from copper and aluminium. Damaged slates allow water penetration and can contribute to the breakdown of the battening system. In most cases, with an older roof, a complete renewal is normally the most practical solution. Prior to that decision being made, we offer a FREE, no obligation assessment of your slate roof to fully assess its condition and to determine whether, as an alternative, cost effective repairs can be made. Whatever your needs for your slate roof, be it repairing or replacing, we will be happy to offer our professional advice in helping you make your decision.
