Health and Safety

HEALTH AND SAFETY

ALL ROOFING AND BUILDING LTD recognises and accepts its responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace and working environment and will take steps which are reasonably practical to meet it’s responsibilities, paying particular attention to effective planning, organisation, control, or preventative and protective measures of the following:-

 

SUB CONTRACTORS

Ensure:-

1. That all sub-contractors used are approved specialists within their field and suited to the work in question.

2. That all sub-contractors are made aware of Health and Safety Regulations referring to ALL ROOFING & BUILDING LTD.

3. That all sub-contractors are made aware of Health and Safety Regulations with regard to other contractors and contractor’s sites while working under contract to ALL ROOFING & BUILDING LTD.

4. That AS A SUB CONTRACTOR, ALL ROOFING & BUILDING LTD will be responsible for any other sub-contractors working directly for them.

5. That AS A SUB CONTRACTOR, ALL ROOFING & BUILDING LTD will ensure that all contractors comply with their own Health and Safety Regulations.

 

CONTRACTORS

Ensure:-

1. That all contractors have carried out risk assessments in compliance with their Health and Safety Regulations prior to any sub-contractor commencing work.

2. That AS A CONTRACTOR, ALL ROOFING & BUILDING LTD, will comply with the Health and Safety Regulations as listed below.

 

MANUAL HANDLING

Ensure:-

1. That it is avoided where there is a risk of injury.

2. That if unavoidable the risks have been assessed and reduced.

 

HEALTH

Ensure:-

1. That all hazardous substances, e.g. asbestos, lead, solvent etc have been identified and the risks assessed.

2. That safer substances are substituted where possible.

3. That if possible exposure is controlled.

4. That safety equipment is provided and used.

5. That other workers who are not protected are kept out of danger areas.

6. That in confined spaces the atmosphere had been tested and a fresh air supply provided if necessary.

MACHINERY

Ensure:-

1. That dangerous parts, e.g. exposed gears, chain drivers, projection engine shafts are properly protected.

2. That guards are regularly checked and in good repair.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

Ensure:-

1. That suitable equipment is provided i.e. head protection, eye protection, hands and feet where appropriate.

2. That workers wear their protective equipment.

 

SAFE ACCESS

Ensure:-

1. That there are arrangements to deal with visitors and workers.

2. That everyone can reach their work area safely via safe roads, gangways, ladders and scaffolds.

3. That all walkways are level and free from obstruction.

4. That protection is provided to all edges to prevent falls, especially more than 2 metres.

5. That all holes are securely fenced or protected with marked covers.

6. That the site is tidy and materials stored.

7. That waste is collected and disposed of safely.

8. That there are chutes for waste to avoid materials being thrown.

9. That nails in timber are removed or hammered down.

10. That safe lighting is provided when working in dark or poor light.

11. That structures are made safe with props and shores when necessary.

 

FIRE (COMPRESSED GASES, E.G. LPG, ACETYLENE) HEAT WORK

Ensure:-

1. That cylinders are properly stored and the valve is fully closed when cylinder is not in use.

2. That cylinders in use are sited outside huts.

3. The working area be cleared of moveable combustible material to a safe distance from the place where any works are taking place.

4. That adequate fire extinguishing products are readily available including the use of non- combustible screens or covers.

5. That Bitumen tar or pitch be heated in the open in a vessel designed for that purpose and seated on a non combustible surface.

6. That there is minimal use of heat appliances and that no heat appliance be left unattended.

7. That a safety check be made of any working area during and following completion of the days work.

8. That all contractors and sub-contractors be aware of necessary procedures to following on the discovery of any fire or smelting.

 

ROOF WORK

Ensure:-

1. That crawling ladders or crawling boards are used on roofs that slope more than ten degrees.

2. That, if not, the roof battens provide a safe handhold and foothold.

3. That there are barriers or edge protection to stop people or materials falling from sloping or flat roofs.

4. That crawling boards are provided and used where people work on fragile materials such as asbestos cement sheets or glass and warning notices are posted.

5. That suitable guard rails, covers etc are provided where people pass or work near such fragile materials.

6. That roof lights are properly covered or provided with barriers.

7. That precautions are taken to stop debris from falling onto others working under the roof work.

 

LADDERS

Ensure:-

1. That correct access is chosen i.e. ladders, scaffold or other.

2. That ladders are in good condition and properly positioned.

3. That ground is firm and level.

4. That ladders are secured near the top as is practical or near the bottom, and are weighted or footed to prevent slipping.

5. That ladders rise at least 1.05 metres above their landing place or highest rungs used, or that there are adequate hand holds.

 

SCAFFOLDS

Ensure:-

1. That there is proper access to the scaffolds platform.

2. That all uprights are properly founded and provided with base plates and where necessary that there are timber base plates or some other method to prevent slipping and/or sinking.

3. That the scaffold is sufficiently secured to the building to prevent collapse and the ties are strong enough and that ties removed since scaffold was erected have been properly replaced.

4. That the scaffold is adequately braced to ensure stability and load bearing fittings are used were required.

5. That checks are made on the removal of uprights, ledgers or struts.

6. That working platforms are fully boarded and that boards are free from obvious defects such as knots and are arranged to prevent tipping or tripping and that boards are fixed down if high winds are forecast.

7. That there are adequate guard rails and tow boards at every side from which a person could fall 2 metres or more.

8. That if the scaffold has been designed and constructed for loading with materials, that they are evenly distributed.

9. That there are effective barriers or warning notices to stop people using incomplete scaffold.

10. That a competent person inspects the scaffold at least once a week and always after bad weather.

 

EXCAVATIONS

Ensure:-

1. That all under ground services are located (with locators and plans), marked and precautions taken to avoid them.

2. That an adequate supply of suitable timber, trench sheets, props or other supporting material has been delivered to site before excavation begins.

3. That a safe method is used for putting in and taking out the timbering, i.e. one that does not rely on people working within an unsupported trench.

4. That there is a safe access to the excavation e.g. by a sufficiently long ladder.

5. That there are barriers to stop people falling in

6. That the excavation does not affect the stability of nearby buildings

7. That the risk of the excavation flooding is properly addressed

8. That stacked materials or plant near the edge of the excavation is not likely to cause collapse at the side.

9. That should vehicles tip into the excavation, properly secured stop blocks are used.
